Workshops

Jay specializes in organic long-form improvised theater and has developed several topical workshops that he would love to teach at your festival or event. If you don't see what you're looking for below, please send Jay an email at jay@jayrevis.com. He'll be happy to put together something special that fits your needs.

Instant Character

Do you find yourself playing the same four stock characters in scenes? Do most of your characters look, sound, and act just like you? Wouldn’t it be nice to confidently create new and interesting characters in every show? This workshop will teach you the techniques and give you the confidence to create dynamic, fresh characters with distinct points of view almost instantaneously.

Play It Slow and Real

Sure, audiences love fast and furious improv, but you can really wow them by mixing in moments of high drama and emotion. Learn how to slow down and listen at the textual, sub-textual, and contextual levels and connect both with your scene partners and with the show. It's about to get REAL!

Presence - Be Here Now

The improvisor’s enemy is judgement and self-doubt. What should I say next? Did I make a bad choice? This workshop will teach techniques to silence the inner critic by playing more mindfully in the here and now.

Bending Space and Time

May I please have a suggestion of a location that WON’T fit on the stage? Why limit ourselves? In this workshop we’ll explore techniques to break the limitations of time and space by "morphing" size, distance, movement, and perspective.

Build Your Own Playground

Why do we do object and environment work, and how do we make use of the environment once we’ve created it? In this workshop we’ll learn techniques to build a fun, vibrant environment for ourselves and to take inspiration from the things we've created to enrich our scenes.

The Monoscene

A monoscene is an improv format that takes place in a single location in real time without edits or time dashes. Sounds scary, right? It isn't. In this workshop we'll explore the particular challenges of a monoscene, such as relationship dynamics, implied edits, side games, secret knowledge, and sharing focus so that you can perform long scenes with confidence.

Scene Study and Analysis

A long-form scene workshop with analysis and individualized feedback.  This workshop can be customized on the fly to support the specific needs and desires of the attendees.

Consent Conversations for Teachers and Directors

In this workshop designed for teachers, directors, and theater leaders we will explore together the importance of consent conversations, how to initiate them within your classes and your performing groups, and how to develop a culture where consent conversations are normalized and discomfort is minimized.

Advanced Scenework Intensive

A multi - day intensive covering advanced scene work topics and techniques including character point of view, object and environment, listening and awareness, presence, stagecraft, and acting.
